The Story
Imperial China's most selective music school.
This office trained the musicians and dancers for heaven's own ceremonies, and to get in you passed four tests: a proper face, literacy, true pitch, perfect manners. Yes — first they checked your face.
At the heart of the training sat one great repertoire: Zhonghe Shaoyue, the ritual music of the imperial court — its name means balance, harmony, perfection — performed only at the grandest ceremonies of the throne.
In the Ming dynasty, the musicians were Daoist priests: three hundred of them moved north with the capital in 1420.
Walk in today, and you'll find a museum of royal music — with Zhonghe Shaoyue still performed inside, instruments and all.
The music never really stopped.
